Film Loops

Whitewash
A 16mm film loop projection produced for the exhibition Culture Slash Nation curated by Lorraine Johnson and Cheryl Sourkes for Toronto Photographers Workshop in 1995

At the time of this exhibition Toronto’s downtown West side was undergoing major changes as rapid urban development saw artist studios and artist-run galleries become high-end condos and corporate retail spaces. The image of white-washing reflected the homogenizing process of gentrification that forced rents up and artists out. This 16mm film loop projection ran for a week on the wall of the Spadina Hotel, at the corner of King Street West and Spadina Avenue, that housed the Cabana Room and main floor bar then popular among local artists.

Walking Around
A 16mm film loop installation produced for an exhibition of film loops curated by Greg Woodbury for the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers Toronto (LIFT) in 1996

A film projector sits atop a turntable on the floor in the middle of the room projecting the image of feet walking. We see the image clearly as it passes across a curved screen, then distorted as it moves across the surrounding walls, and clearly as it returns to the screen continuously.
