About

Kathryn Walter has maintained a studio practice since 1989 working at the intersections of visual art, design and material culture. She lived and worked in Vancouver in the late 80s and in Montreal through the early 90s where she explored issues of urban development and social history through a range of forms and approaches to materials, including site-specific installations, text-based interventions, performance and film loop projections.

In the late 90s, she returned to her hometown of Toronto where she found inspiration in her family’s history as felt merchants. In 2000, she founded FELT, her own company and label, and has since worked almost exclusively with manufactured felts through interior installations, products and exhibitions. As artist, designer, director and maker, Walter finds balance between commercial and experimental work with some projects being formal investigations of structure, texture and tone while others explore the rich history and material culture of felt.
