Whitewash
A 16mm film loop projection produced for the exhibition Culture slash Nation curated by Lorraine Johnson and Cheryl Sourkes
Toronto Photographers Workshop, 1995
At the time of this exhibition Toronto’s downtown West side was undergoing major changes as rapid urban development saw artist studios and artist-run galleries turn into high-end condos and corporate retail spaces. The image of white-washing reflected the homogenizing process of gentrification that forced rents up and artists out. This 16mm film loop projection ran for a week on the wall of the Spadina Hotel, at the corner of King Street West and Spadina Avenue, that housed the Cabana Room and main floor bar then popular among local artists.
